color blind

January 19th, 2009

growing up, i was taught that all people are equal. that we are all children of God and connected through a much higher love than we can ever begin to understand. divisions of race, religion, and social status did not make sense to me as a child, nor do they now.
the focus on our election of the “first Black President” takes away from who the man truly is and places the focus merely on the color of his complexion. i celebrate that we have, at last, come to a place in our country where anyone, regardless of race or gender, can aspire to the highest office. now, if we can just become blind to the differences and open to embrace the simple fact that we are, yes indeed, all one.

let us all have a dream . . .

“I” cannot reach fulfillment without “thou.” The self cannot be self without other selves. Self-concern without other-concern is like a tributary that has no outward flow to the ocean. ~Martin Luther King, Jr., Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, 1967

We are everlasting debtors to known and unknown men and women…. When we arise in the morning, we go into the bathroom where we reach for a sponge provided for us by a Pacific Islander. We reach for soap that is created for us by a Frenchman. The towel is provided by a Turk. Then at the table we drink coffee which is provided for us by a South American, or tea by a Chinese, or cocoa by a West African. Before we leave for our jobs, we are beholden to more than half the world. ~Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength to Love, 1963

If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you to go on in spite of all. And so today I still have a dream. ~Martin Luther King, Jr., The Trumpet of Conscience, 1968

so . . . here i go!

January 18th, 2009

For years, I have enjoyed reading my nephew and sister’s blogs. It not only helps me keep up with what is going on in their busy lives, but it also brings unexpected smiles and thought-provoking messages.

It is my hope, that through this blog, i will be able to share my thoughts on the things that are important in my life. As a yoga instructor, students ask me the most wonderful questions. i will try to answer many of those questions here, and will also pose my own questions as we travel along on this journey of life together.

First, allow me to explain where the name “Feels Like OM” came from. When Lamont and i were first considering names for our yoga studio, this was one that we  thought of, because we wanted to provide a place of comfort, where everyone would feel welcome and have a sense of connection with others, as well as a reconnection with themselves.

The symbol “Om” is often misunderstood. Close your eyes and imagine a world at peace. Acceptance of self and others. Compassion and love in abundance. This is the sound, the feeling of Om.

So . . . here i go, beginning the blog journey. i hope you will enjoy the journey with me!
